Overview for Facilities Pharmacists

Facilities pharmacists dispense medications and advise the medical staff on the selection and effects of drugs. They may also make up sterile solutions to be administered through intravenous lines.. These professionals plan, monitor and evaluate drug programs or regimens. They may advise hospitalized patients on the use of drugs before the patients are discharged.

Employment Situation

Employment of facilities pharmacists is expected to grow by 22 percent between 2006 and 2016, much faster than the average for all occupations. As the population ages, demand will increase from insurers to use pharmacists to educate patients and administer vaccinations in an effort to control expenses.

Education Outlook

A pharmacy license is required, Pharmacists must earn a Pharm.D. degree from an accredited college or school of pharmacy. The Pharm.D. degree has replaced the Bachelor of Pharmacy degree, which is no longer being awarded. To be admitted to a Pharm.D. program, an applicant must have completed at least two years of postsecondary study, although most applicants have completed 3 or more years.

Salary Expectations for Facilities Pharmacists

Median annual earnings of facilities pharmacists in May 2006 totaled $94,520. The Pay ranged from less than $67,860 to over $119,480 a year.
